More than 100 people died and more than 4,000 were injured in the two huge explosions that occurred in the port of Beirut that devastated entire neighborhoods of the city, as rescuers continued to search for more victims on Wednesday amid the smoking ruins.

“So far, more than 4,000 people have been injured and more than 100 have lost their lives. Our teams are still conducting search and rescue operations in the surrounding areas, ”said the Red Cross statement.

The Lebanese capital, declared a “disaster” city, woke up in shock after these explosions, so powerful that they were recorded by sensors from the United States Geological Institute (USGS) as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.

At the epicenter of the explosion, whose shock wave was felt even on the island of Cyprus, more than 200 kilometers away, the panorama was still apocalyptic: the containers look like twisted cans, the cars are charred, the ground, carpeted with suitcases and papers that shot out of the nearby offices.

The rescuers, with the help of security guards, searched all night for survivors or dead trapped under the rubble.

At the moment the last balance of the Ministry of Health is 100 dead and almost 4,000 injured, but it could increase during the day. Hospitals in the capital, faced with the pandemic of the new coronavirus, are saturated.
