Mandatory covers and limited capacity: this will be the reopening of Disney on Saturday

After being closed for almost four months, the Walt Disney World theme parks will reopen with a deliberate and responsible approach. What will be the gradual reopening that will begin on July 11

The Walt Disney World Resort theme parks are gearing up for a gradual reopening – with a significant reduction in capacity – beginning July 11, 2020, with the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom parks. EPCOT and Disney´s Hollywood Studios will follow them on July 15, 2020.

After being closed for almost four months, the Walt Disney World theme parks will reopen with a premeditated and responsible approach based on the experience of reopening the Shanghai Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland and Disney Springs. Every aspect of a visit to a Disney theme park has been re-examined, considering the new global environment, with new policies following the directions of health experts and government agencies. In addition to the limits of capacity and controlled density of visitors, new procedures will be implemented at the entrance of parks, attractions, restaurants, shops, transportation and others, considering the welfare of visitors and members of the Disney cast as a priority in planning.

Aon with these changes, the basic foundations of a Disney theme park experience will remain the same. Disney stories will come to life at attractions and through beloved characters, implementing Disney’s characteristic creativity and innovation to provide new ways to enjoy these experiences. The cast members begin to return to their work and carefully prepare to perform their roles, donning their uniforms and donning their badges for the first time in months. Because, despite what is happening in the world, they are ready to help visitors discover that magic is here again, in the theme parks of Walt Disney World.

Disney Park Pass Reservation System

To promote physical distancing, the capacity of the Walt Disney World theme parks will be limited. During the reopening, visitors will need to ensure they have valid admission tickets or Annual Passes, then they must use the new Disney Park Pass system to reserve their entrance to each park, prior to their visit.

Once visitors log into My Disney Experience at and link their tickets, they will have access to a calendar of available visit dates for each theme park. Multi-day tickets require a reservation for each park, for each day of its validity. Families and friends can link their tickets and together book their tickets to theme parks at the same time. The number of park access reservations is limited and subject to availability.

Health and safety procedures

By fostering collaboration between visitors and Disney cast members to promote the health and safety of all, theme parks will feature new safety protocols during this gradual reopening.

“Our deliberate and progressive approach at Walt Disney World Resort emphasizes different levels of health and safety measures,” said Dr. Pamela Hymel, Medical Director of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “We are taking a multi-purpose approach to our reopening, after considering the directions of various government authorities and health agencies, and the recommendations of our team of health and safety experts. We are also actively working with industry groups and research universities to discuss best practices. ”

These new measures include:

-Use of appropriate face masks – All visitors over the age of 2, in addition to the cast members, must wear an appropriate face mask during their entire visit. They should wear it on the nose and mouth at all times, except when eating or drinking.

-Transportation – The capacity and density of visitors will be limited in all the means of transport of courtesy in Walt Disney World, and the use of an adequate mask will be required during the whole journey. The buses and monorail will implement a combination of distance and physical barriers to ensure separation between visitor groups. Groups of visitors will be required to maintain physical distance while aboard a Disney boat. Disney Skyliner will allow boarding of a single group of visitors per gondola when it resumes operations on July 15, 2020. For those arriving in their own vehicles, tollbooths will offer cashless payment options and parking trolleys will not be available at this time.

-Temperature tests – All visitors must undergo temperature tests before entering a theme park. Based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone with a temperature equal to or greater than 100.4 ° F / 38 ° C will be directed to an additional location for reassessment of temperature and care. Those with a temperature equal to or greater than 100.4 ° F / 38 ° C at the second checkup, will not be able to access, nor will those in their group.

  • Physical distance and capacity measurements – To maintain proper physical distance, a limited number of visitors will be able to access each theme park each day. Limits will also be established for closed spaces within parks such as shops and restaurants. Additionally, marks will be placed on the ground to help promote proper spacing in the parks, including the rows of attractions. Physical barriers will be established in specific places where it is difficult to maintain strict physical distance.

-Cleaning – High traffic areas will receive more cleaning and disinfection. Visitors will be encouraged to use hand washing stations and hand sanitizer, available at theme parks, frequently. – Cashless transactions – Visitors will be encouraged to use electronic payment methods that minimize contact, including Magic Bands, debit cards, credit cards, Disney gift cards, mobile payments, etc.

The cast members have been prepared with extensive new training for the reopening of theme parks in this new setting. Incredi-Crew cast members will wear brightly colored, easy-to-identify t-shirts and walk through the parks to explain the new procedures and clarify any queries to visitors, while encouraging them to follow these new health and safety measures.

Meal procedure

New measures will be implemented to promote health and wellness in Walt Disney World theme park restaurants during their gradual reopening. These include intensified cleaning procedures in seats, dining rooms and common areas, as well as changes in self-service options. Additionally, mobile technology has been implemented through the My Disney Experience app to provide options that conveniently minimize physical contact. Options include Mobile Order at select fast-service restaurants, Mobile Dine Check-In available at select table-service restaurants, and reduced contact menus at select theme park restaurants.

The most popular attractions return to the theme parks

Most attractions will be available in each park when they reopen. Visitors can enter a world of cartoons at Disney’s Hollywood Studios when they experience the new attraction Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, or visit Valley of Mo’ara in Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Soarin ’Around the World will take flight at EPCOT, and Magic Kingdom will offer a group of classic attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Space Mountain.

Character experiences and entertainment

Part of the magic of the Walt Disney World Resort theme parks is being able to see beloved Disney characters. Due to the interruption of parades and encounters with characters and to ensure physical distance, experiences with characters in theme parks have been reimagined.

-In Magic Kingdom, different characters will move during the day along the traditional route of the parade. Other characters will appear in new locations, such as Captain Jack Sparrow who will suddenly appear in Adventureland.

-At EPCOT, visitors will be able to see Queen Anna and Elsa venture “much further” on a trip around the World Showcase, or Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto and Goofy on their own tour around the world.

-Pixar Animation Studios characters will appear on Hollywood Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, greeting their beloved fans. And in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, visitors should make sure to “move on” if they encounter First Order Stormtroopers.

-Visitors at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be able to see Disney characters sailing the Discovery River in special boats, such as Donald Duck, Daisy, Pocahontas and others.

Some ambient entertainment groups will also return, such as Main Street Philharmonic at Magic Kingdom, Mariachi Cobre and the JAMMitors at EPCOT, and Discovery Island Drummers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Entertainment experiences that attract large groups of people, such as nightly shows, have been slow.

A new festival comes to EPCOT

A new version of the popular EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival will debut on July 15 when the park reopens, and will continue throughout the fall. The Taste of EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival will be the longest festival in the history of Walt Disney World, combining the floral fun of the annual EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival with the world delights of the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival.

This new event will offer more than 20 international markets, including Hawaii, Hops & Barley and the Caribbean Islands. Additional tables will be placed around the park where visitors will be able to stop, remove their masks and enjoy the festival dishes while maintaining physical distance. Visitors will be able to take photos in front of the park’s newest topiary, Remy’s, in the French pavilion and purchase merchandise from the 2020 International EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival.
